The modern lifestyle has made us vulnerable to personal and professional stress. If it’s the urgent meetings and anxious appointments with our bosses in the office, at home we have to do our daily chores for our family like paying the bills or create savings. The pity is that many of us resort to short cuts like taking anti-depressants, which might have short-term benefits but in the long run these medications can be detrimental for our health. The long-term solution lies in the art of holistic healing like Yoga. It is one of the most ancient techniques of managing stress and other ailments, which create physical and mental imbalances in our bodies. Several studies have shown the positive effects of Yoga on people suffering from anxiety, depression and mental illnesses. Yoga inculcates several breathing exercises along with various movements or positions that helps the mind and body to detox naturally.
The best part about Yoga is that it can be done anywhere and anytime to de-stress your mind. So whenever, you are feeling the daily pressures at work or home, switch to these simple yet effective Yoga techniques. Asana or position is the building block for any Yoga exercise. Thankfully the art of Yoga has special Asana techniques to curb depression and anxiety.
Pranayam - These are numerous deep breathing exercises, which stress on paying attention to your breathing patterns so that the mind can focus on the present rather than being distracted by various emotions or stress. Start by sitting in a cross-legged position and breathe in till you feel the air expanding in your chest. Then slowly breathe out till the time you feel contraction of your lungs and abdomen. The secret of Pranayam, lies in focusing on your breathing and neglect all the negativities surrounding you.
Bhujangasana - Also known as the cobra position, this position is all about lying flat on your abdomen against the floor. Now bend your back by raising your head slowly while you inhale. Remain stable in this position for a few seconds and then slowly exhale and return back to the flat position on the floor. This Asana helps in reducing stress in various areas of your body, while the breathing channelizes your mind with positive energies.
Uttanasana - This is one the most basic and perhaps the most powerful positions to get rid of depression in Yoga. In this Asana, you have to bend forward and touch the floor with your hands while you breathe in then slowly come back to an upright position while you exhale. The head movements and breathing exercises makes it a potent technique for relaxation.
Setu Bandha Sarvangasana - In this position your body is shaped like a bridge. Start by lying on your back with your hands straight and palms faced upwards. Now fold your knees and lift your back straight up while keeping your upper body stable on the ground. This position is beneficial for your back and other core joints and muscles of your body. The position also stimulates the release of hormones, which keep you active and positive.
Yoga can be extremely beneficial for your mind, body and soul. However, whenever you travel or practice Yoga at home, make sure that you are carrying your EHIC card as it can help you with medical insurance for any health emergency or injury caused due to Yoga.
